Uganda’s hit TV Series Kyaddala is set for a big comeback on NBS TV following the premier for season two on Thursday, 3rd March, 2022 at Mestil Hotel in an event organized by Reach A Hand Uganda and partners; Incredible Media, Population Services International, MBS, Light for the World, UNESCO Uganda, Mariestopes, CEHURD, Uganda Waragi, Rutgers, Segel Family Foundation, QUADA and Movit.

The glamorous red carpet event was graced by the series’ talented and diverse cast who appeared cheerful and thrilled for season 2.

The objective of the show is to educate the youth on sexual reproductive and health rights (SRHR). It tackles social issues, sexual and reproductive health, relationship issues and family issues affecting the youth growing up. Kyaddala is an all-around educative and captivating TV drama series that shines light into troubles facing experiences with love, sex, lust, awareness and prevention of HIV/AIDs.

The cast depicts the experiences in the lives of the diverse characters sharped by their upbringing, family background and choices in life. The characters in the show portray the experiences in the lives of several young adults and university students as they confront the realities of love, jobs and families. It challenges cultural, religious and social norms around living with HIV/AIDs, explores mental health issues like social anxiety, patriarchy, feminism, sexual reproductive and health rights, and rights of persons with disabilities.

A glimpse into a relationship between different people with incompatible values and beliefs is shown when Linda Nangobi, a morally upright student at Victoria University from a reserved and staunch family background enters into a relationship with a fellow student, Caleb Otto played by Brian Abajah, who in contrast is from a rich family, attended the best schools and he is a sole owner of high end bar, Vapors Lounge. 

The challenges of the rich socialite, influencer and womanizer emerge after he was diagnosed with HIV/AIDs which drove him into depression. He later takes a journey into recovery through therapy after a failed suicide attempt on his life.

The enthralling drama also shows the plight of a young married woman, Shamim Sserumbe played by Harmonie Kyomugisha seeking a divorce from Hajji Hamza played by Bruce Charles, who is responsible from her education at university after completion of A level courtesy of her father’s wealthy social relations.

Her endeavor to break free from the control of her husband is driven by her liberal belief that she must have fun and take adventures in her youth.  Her contradicting life as a part time waitress, student, wife and feminist is covered in this captivating drama series.  

The transformation of a student whose pursuit for a modeling career drove her from USA to Uganda is played by the instagram influencer, Lucy Bunyenyezi casted as Fiona Rutagambwaage. She is inspired by the departure of her friend, Umotoni to Dubai to become a champion for sexual assault. She leads her life as a socialite and corporate prostitute with her cousin Aaliyah played by Zion Amanda.

Aaliyah is a student who works part time as a casino waitress under the mistaken belief that she is positive with HIV/AIDs which leads to a life of recklessness as a result. She is secretive and reserved personality. She is also flirtatious, lively, easily gets bitter and psychologically disturbed.   

Ugandan musician Allan Tonix is casted as Dave Tugume, a role where he acts as a student that works part time as a music producer. Dave was diagnosed with polio in his childhood and he blames his mother for it. He feels condemned to a life in a wheel chair and puts up an act in public to show that he is immune to criticism but he hurts in private. He picks up as a musician with vocal range and incredible writing skills.

The drama series also casted Anita Fabiola as Tina Mirungi, which role she acts as a student and entrepreneur that is a sole bread winner for her family and trapped in an abusive relationship with a married man called Mr. Oyello Henry played by Jawar Lwanda whose children she has aborted thrice. She is a gorgeous woman who knows that men will not take her seriously and uses her beauty for her ends. 

Tracy Kababiito bounces back to the big screen as Amanda Welaaba , young sister to Tina and plays the role of a simple, smart, determined and hardworking student that trusts easily and dresses conservatively with a challenging upbringing where she is a second of five children from her mother and promiscuous father who has 15 children in the village from different women. She aborted while in secondary school but nobody is aware of it. Her mother operated small scale businesses to enable her get through government schools. Tina took her in from A level and paid for her education and she has since been taking care of her

The TV drama series is a toolkit for youth organization geared towards encouraging peer education to address wider gender issues and trigger behavioral change. It hopes to start a dialogue on real issues that increase the agency of the youth to cause awareness about SRHR.

Reach A Hand Uganda (RAHU) tests gender based story lines and starts a conversation that encourages gender awareness with season 2 of Kyaddala. For the past 10 years according to Humphrey Nabimanya, CEO and founder of RAHU and Executive Director, Kyaddala, RAHU has empowered young people across different districts in Uganda towards social transformation and it’s their belief that the youth have the talent and drive to shape their own destiny. Kyaddala, season two further consolidates RAHU’s vision of empowering young people to tell their own stories through their own lenses.
